Day 16 Tribal Ikat Nails

Today is the tribal themed mani! It's also the hump day of this challenge! We're now over half way through.

After a couple of nail fails, I finally settled on an ikat print design for this mani.

I started by layering a darker color over a lighter color (China Glaze Kalahari Kiss & CG Jungle Queen). I then used acetone and a q-tip to remove the top layer of polish and create diamond patterns. At this point, it looked really bad. I then took a black striping polish and went around the diamond patterns with lines, and it started to actually look like ikat print.

Sorry about all of the pictures! I couldn't narrow it down!

You can do this look without using the acetone and instead painting the lighter color on top of the darker. This was actually one of my failed attempts, though. I think that using acetone to eat through to the other color gives this a more fabric-like look, which I like.

And while I like these colors, I think it would be fun to do this next time with orange or turquoise instead of the purple color!

Both of these colors are from China Glaze's safari fall 2012 collection. I know everyone has had these colors for a while. I think China Glaze was one of the first fall collections out in like August. I actually just got a few from this collection because they were on sale in my local Sally store. Imagine that! Fall colors on sale in September.

I really loved both of these colors, and I especially love the picture below. It really shows the subtle shimmer in Jungle Queen.
